Erythema multiforme

Erythema multiforme or better known as EM caused alot of drama in our lives 2 years ago. Poor little Caleb began to break out in these large rash like welts all over his body after an immunization.  They were itchy, and caused him alot of annoyance, if not pain. His skin, and lips would also turn blue and purple at random times. Very scary.

It took one ambulance visit, and 3 doctor visits to finally diagnose this strange phenomon.

Erythema multiforme is a skin condition of unknown etiology, possibly mediated by deposition of immune complex ( mostly IgM ) in the superficial microvasculature of the skin and oral mucous membrane that usually follows an antecedent infection or drug exposure. It is a common disorder, with peak incidence in the second and third decades of life.

The condition varies from a mild, self-limited rash (E. multiforme minor)[1] to a severe, life-threatening form known as erythema multiforme major (or erythema multiforme majus) that also involves mucous membranes. This severe form may be related to Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The mild form is far more common than the severe form.

The mild form usually presents with mildly itchy, pink-red blotches, symmetrically arranged and starting on the extremities. It often takes on the classical “target lesion” appearance,[2] with a pink-red ring around a pale center. Resolution within 7-10 days is the norm.

The most common predisposing infection is Herpes simplex, but bacterial infections (commonly Mycoplasma) and fungal diseases are also implicated.

Other causes include drug reactions, most commonly to sulfa drugs, phenytoin, barbiturates, penicillin, and allopurinol, or a host of internal ailments.

The human form of orf can also cause erythema multiforme. ( Wikipedia)

Basically Caleb will have EM his entire life. It may or may not continue to affect him. Until last night, we assumed we were in the clear. Until it reared it’s ugly head once again. It’s not a pretty sight.

And this time we have no idea what the cause is from. It could be any kind of bacteria or virus he picked up at the playground or playschool.

This morning I will be on the phone with his Dr. We need to confirm that it is in fact EM. ( she most likely will want see him) The hard part is that there is nothing we can do to cure him. No medicine given, no solutions.

But Prayer. Prayer is powerful. Please pray for our little rashy man! I’ll update you later today!
